When my client approached me to paint on her Picotin, she wanted to portray the European Alps with small figures skiing and snow boarding. It's her family's favourite holiday activity and she hope to capture this bluebird powder day on her bag. She also mentioned that she wants a beautiful scene but was afraid of the anime style that was quite prominent on my page at that time. That would not be her style. (I would like to think I've grown to showcase more styles by now đŸ˜‚).
There were lengthy discussions between us and each step was worth it. My final design is to bring the viewer across the Alps throughout the day, starting from skiing under the morning blue skies on the right and winding down at the village in the golden rays of the evening on the left. See the transformation from left to right!
D put together a mood board to show me her preferred art style. Also added photos of her ski trip to illustrate the 'bluebird power day' scene.
I drew so many drafts of the male skier which were all wrong. D patiently guided me on the technical details on the correct and safe pose for skiing.
The reason behind the brightly-dressed kids on the small slope.
The warm evening of Gstaad. I initially designed houses by the lake but D introduced me to the wonderful world of Gstaad. Definitely made the scenery more complete now!
When you look at a piece of art, you sometimes neglect the effort that was put in before it was even painted. But every effort put in will show and not go to waste.
If I had an ice cream every time someone refers to this bag when they start a design discussion with me, I would be a fatty! Oh wait, make that a happy fatty! It's a rare to have a work which will leave such a deep impression in people's minds, so I will take it!
